I think that most things that are handmade, and made well, will reflect a certain philosophy of use/vision. What drew me to the tora knives after using a few other ones was the sense of tradition built into them - when I had an image of 'kukri' in my mind and imagined how one would feel...the Toras fit the bill. I showed a photo of my Indra to a Nepalese friend of mine and he seemed to think that it was quite impressive. I would never want to discourage people from choosing a tool, but at the risk of sounding corny, the tora knife resonates with me differently from other knives I have used.

(great video review btw)

-mike-

Implying many attitudes and arguments based purely on fancy and made up fact(i.e. opinion). Some years back, a similar controversy existed in the Historical European sword making community. At times it got down right ugly and discorteous. Eventually those of one camp realised that they really didn't have a dog in the fight as their favorite maker really wasn't making historical swords but performance swords that had some aesthetic of the Euro variety.

Now each keeps to his own more or less, though occasionally there is a small flare up now and again...

Let the water settle in for a minute or two and then blow dry the sheath with a hair dryer. This will make it nice and stiff even after the conditioner is added later.

Some say to do this before you add the dye and some say to do it after the dye. I have tried it both ways but usually do it before I apply the dye. It is at ths time, while the sheath is wet that you can do any forming of the sheath (if needed) to make it fit the handle or guards.

It conditions leather and it usually darkens it a bit too. The only problem with oils etc is that usually they will soften the leather too, which some people don't want. Carnauba wax works quite well to condition the leather too.

If you decided to dye it...I would choose an oil based dye. They seem to sink in better without as much bleeding out later.
